Enneagrams and Business with Callie Ammons
By: Melissa Lin
Today I have a very special guest with me, Callie Ammons. Callie runs a media company where she speaks coaches, podcasts, and helps people live with intention through the enneagram. How cool is that? She is an expert in the enneagram and helps individuals understand their internal world. She typically works with women who are highly ambitious, that believe there is more in her to come out. Today we will be diving into all things enneagram. Big loving welcome. We're so excited to have you here with us, Callie.
So Callie, can you just walk us through how you got started? Really, how you got to where you are today? How did you get into everything? We cannot wait to hear?
Yeah, absolutely. So like Melissa said, currently I'm an enneagram life coach. So what that means is I really help people understand why they do what they do. And that's what I do every day. I'm a full time entrepreneur. But when this started for me it was October 2019. So it hasn't even been a full year yet since I completely left my full time jobs. And what this process has looked like is really, about three years ago, I was really getting into just self development. So all types of personality assessments mindset growing; like what are my strengths, what are my weaknesses, and most I became obsessed with It. I'm sure you've experienced this too, because when you start unlocking these things about yourself, you start realizing how much control you actually have about your life, like your mindset and how you show up every day, even if your external situations aren't ideal. If your internal world is set and confident, you can do anything. And so I was finding all of this freedom in my life. I have been married for five years. And my husband and I are the complete opposites, like so opposite. But we get along really well. And our marriage started to improve a lot, the way I saw myself, my confidence started to improve just by me learning about myself. And in this process, the enneagram was one of those tools that I stumbled on. It was actually my little sister, she had taken a test and gone to counseling and just was learning more about the enneagram. And so her and I would always talk about these things, and she brought it up and I had actually never heard of it and so I dove deep. I was reading all the books, listening to podcasts, and it was different. Something was So different about the enneagram than other tools. And what it wasn't just like, okay, Callie, here's your strengths. And here's what you can do with your life. But it was like, here's what you look like when you're healthy and thriving as your type. And here's what it looks like when you're unhealthy or kind of getting stuck in some negative patterns. And I became obsessed with it because I realized from day to day, like we can have a great day and then the next day, maybe you get bad news or you're walking through something hard or something comes up in your business that you didn't expect. And it kind of gives you a step back and you're like, holy crap, like, how do I handle this? And the enneagram started showing me like, Oh, I'm moving into my stress path, and I'm struggling right now. But here's practical steps I can take to get me back on the right roadmap where I'm moving in a direction that I'm creating a life I truly love, and that I'm building my confidence in who I am. So I was applying it to my life. This was three years ago and was experiencing transformation in my personal life, but also the career I was in. I was working at Starbucks in a leadership position, and how about that 30 to 40 employees under me. And I was seeing how this was helping me relate with my different employees because everyone is so different, like I would have some that were so ambitious and could get tasks done. And then I had other people who it was like pulling teeth trying to get them to do what I was asking. And so I started applying these concepts at work and just trying to understand people because anyone listening who doesn't know what the enneagram is, it's nine different personality types. So the enneagram breaks it into nine different individuals. And it helps you understand how we're all motivated differently. So Melissa is a type two on the enneagram. I'm a type three. Her and I are both in love with people. We love helping, we love being ambitious and driven. But we both internally do it for a little bit different of a motive because she's a two and I'm a three. And that's the beauty of it is when you learn other people's motivation, you can start to speak to that motivation to help them. So let's fast forward to October 2019, basically in 2019 I was just talking about the enneagram constantly. And I had started this online business where I was still at the same time doing my two full time jobs trying to build up my side hustle. And I saw this vision of if I could just help people understand the control and the freedom they have in their life, their life will change just like mine has. And the enneagram has become so popular. So I had the idea of combining life coaching with the enneagram because there's a certification for it. And so I went for it. And I haven't looked back since when I launched my business in October. It just completely took off honestly, because of the enneagram. I think it helps that I've been studying it personally and having experienced so much transformation, my audience was used to it and they had heard me talk about it and then I was able to start providing services that helped them experience that same freedom.
So can you dive into what really you do in your business right now? Like, who are you serving? How are you serving them? And what does that look like? I want a little peek into what it looks like, like a day in the life of Callie.
Yeah, absolutely. So I really do like working specifically with highly ambitious people. So my personal gifts and strengths are helping people who are really achieving a lot. So like you, Melissa, it's like you're growing, you're doing a lot and listeners, like you guys are all ambitious with your business. But it's like you always know there's more in you and you seek and hunger for that growth. Those are the people I help and so a day in the life looks like lots of coaching calls with my clients, I talk with them. And to give you a sneak peek in that it's really digging into number one, what's their enneagram type and helping people figure that out. And then once we have that information, that's just the beginning we start to figure out so what does this look like to apply to your personal life, how you view yourself, how you connect with your loved ones. You're friends. And then what about your business? How are you leveraging this string to achieve the goals that you want to achieve? Some of my clients, like we're really diving into their finances and how to manage finances, you'll hear some people say, like, Oh, "I'm just bad with numbers." But that's actually a stereotype. And based on your enneagram type, there's a different way. Maybe you Melissa would manage your money than me, but we both could do it successfully. And it just looks like a different route. And so I help my clients figure that out on a daily basis.
So you started to build this incredible business that you were doing on the side? What was that big process of building that sustainable business? What did that look like? Before leaving your nine to five jobs? I know you and I, we've chatted before so we both have some pretty big stories about leaving right fives and Oh, the excitement there but I think and they're kind of, you know, part time and their business kind of a side hustle getting it going I'm sure he would love to hear a little deeper into what that really looks like.
Yeah, I love that you asked this question and go back. Because I think it's so easy to look at where people are at, like, I could look at you, Melissa and be like, "Oh, she just has this huge company. And she's so awesome." But there was a process and you know that there was like the side to build what you're doing. And it's like, and it doesn't stop. And so I just love that you focus on this part of the stories because I think it's important for everyone to know that we all have beginnings. And don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle, or maybe you know, they're 5-10 years into business and you're somewhere else. But what this really looked like for me was having a mindset shift, recognizing that how I handled the current job I was in from nine to five, how I handled that is actually shaping the person I'm becoming tomorrow and in a year. And so when I started to have that mindset shift instead, “Oh, this is a j o b getting my paycheck.” I started to realize, Oh, how I talk to my employees like at Starbucks. I'm not planning on being here my whole life; but how I lead them, how I talk with them, and how I learned about the numbers in the profit and loss within my department is contributing to the future business I could run. And it started to give me momentum. And it also gave me the courage to stay in it as long as I needed to. And so that was the first thing was having that mindset and making a connection. Because I think there's a difference when we're in a job. And it's just like, “oh, when will this end? Like I just want to do my dream job forever.” But there's a process in "Are you willing to sacrifice?" and I had to get to a point. I remember my husband asking me he said, “If it took you five years in this job to get to where you want to go, are you willing to do it?” And he's like, “I know you can do it way faster than that. But is it that important to you?” That's a really powerful question, because I had to think about it. It's so easy to want the fancy success, but are you willing to do the work that it takes to get there? And so I had to make that decision. Say yes. So what that looked like was having clear goals of like, Okay, what does it look like to build an online platform? What direction am I going? How am I learning skills right now that are going to help me? And then also really looking at how am I becoming the person I need to be in order to be a leader to have a company because I think I just thought, "Oh, you can have these skills and put these things out online." But I didn't realize the mindset and the person you had to be in order to attract that to actually run a business. And so it also looked like building financial stability, like having a budget, like people think that sounds boring, but just being really strategic with my finances, and saving and building a cushion where I'm not going into debt. I'm really against it. I think that it can hinder you more than helping you and if you're wise financially. You give yourself that freedom to run a business where you're not stressed out living paycheck by paycheck; but you have that freedom which can continue to build wealth and more wealth.
And so that's what the process looked like. And it was a two to three year process of implementing that day in day out. Having like the moments driving to work, bingeing every podcast I could, read Books. Just trying to learn from people who have already done this because I'm like, 'if I can learn from their mistakes, then I know I can implement this.' And then this is kind of a long answer. But the last, the last important piece that really made the shift where it went from that transition of being able to go full time was really getting help like investing in myself. So when I started hiring coaches, you're financially invested in so you show up differently and having someone who's pouring into you, is able to critique you, and tell you the hard things was a game changer for me. Absolutely. And yes, there's so many things on Google you can learn but I just think that we are meant to do life with each other. And so even now, today, I still have a coach, a commitment. I will always have a coach because I believe it is worth investing in myself just like I'm asking other people to invest in themselves with my services. And so that's really what switched the whole thing for me.
Yeah, I love that. I'm right there with you always having someone in your corner. Well, it was like that month before It's like September 2019. What was that? Like? Did you know you? You probably had it in your calendar like, "Oh, this is when it's finally happening" what kind of look like what was the build up there?
So at that time, I had actually picked up a second job as well. So I had two full time jobs I was doing and I had felt the urge where it was like, Okay, I need to go full time. Like it's ready to make this jump. But I was scared. I, as a type three, I really care about security, I love money and making money. That's just a part of who I am. And so I was like, “You know what, I'll just quit one job, I'll just do one” and I told my husband that I put my notice on the calendar, and I just had this stirring this deep conviction. I was like, you're quitting both. And I was like, No, I'll just, I'll wait till I'm really doubling/tripling income. Like I just wanted to have this huge security but financially, how I had planned the savings and my husband like where we were financially like we were totally fine to make that leap of faith like just going for it, but I was scared. Honestly, I had this imposter syndrome, what if it doesn't happen? But what happens if I can do it and that was the wrong mindset. So I had to work through that I was battling myself and couldn't sleep and I was like, fine. I'll put on my notice for both jobs. So I did. And what that looked like Melissa was deep fear, anxiety, but also this excitement like, "Callie, you've been working so hard for this for years, like building up for this and it's time like, you are gonna rise to the occasion." And I did, and it was so good to push myself. But what happened when I put in that notice is I realized how much I was trusting in the security of a two week paycheck. And it was such a false security when I even looked at like COVID and what's happened, it's just like, the things we put our security in always aren't that secure. And my own mindset and how I set the course for my life kindles so much more security. It's just been mind blowing to see how God has blessed that decision and to see the results where I'm at today and just choosing to work through that. But I had to do a lot of mindset work that first month of leaving of recognizing like, I need to stop saying what if this doesn't work like that's done it's this will work and it's gonna happen and this is how it's going to happen and when I had that shift it happened.
I love that shift that you had. I feel like I have a very similar like leaving my nine to five experiences you I remember like putting my two weeks notice in and I just was absolutely terrified. But I was at the point where I was taking coaching calls in my car during my lunch break, right? Yes, literally and I could help more people which like that's our vision is helping you back to you more yet. You're not moving closer to that then what are we doing?
Exactly. I'm with you. I was recording podcast episodes late at night like just trying to like scrap by. I love that you share that you were fearful, too. In those two weeks, because I think when we also look at other people and how they're successful, it's easy to feel like they're fearless. And so sometimes like we wait, it's like, oh, when I'm not fearful or when I don't feel anxious, then I'll start my business. Or, then I'll start speaking in front of people, then I'll do the podcast, whatever it is, but you have to do it scared. You literally have to push yourself to take action, and your feelings will catch up with you. I used to be so anxious just getting on a coaching call and now I'm not. It's just that beginning and having to start.
Yeah, I even remembered being so anxious before going live on a Facebook Live. And now I'm going live. I go live like every other day. Yes.
Oh my gosh, I have that experience too. On Instagram. I literally my first live had like an anxiety attack and didn't even know I would. I didn't feel nervous until I saw people popping on; and I closed out of it. Melissa, I literally was so scared. And then I was like traumatized. So it's true that we all you have to start somewhere and you just build off of it.
Yeah. 100% Oh my goodness.
So let's go, let's dive into the enneagram and the different types. There's quite a few of them. We've already got it covered the definition of type two, your type three, but what are all other types? Maybe figure out what they are.
I feel like the word enneagram also can sound confusing, like people are like, well, what the heck are you saying the angiogram, but it simply just means nine points on a graph in the Greek. And so that's what you can think of is nine points so there's nine different types. So the type one is called a perfectionist, and their biggest motivation in life is they want to be right and correct. And they really see black and white. So if you don't do something correctly, they're just scared that they're going to be false and that they're not going to be redeemable. And that's the type one. The type two, which is Melissa, is the helper. In their biggest mindset is they literally live to help people they just want to be wanted and loved and used in a way to impact other people's lives and That's what drives them. The type three, which is my type, is the achiever. And we really want success in anything we do. So whether people are looking at us or it's on our own, like if I set my alarm for 5am, and don't get up at five, like I'm annoyed at myself, it's like, you set that goal. So we're really ambitious. And we have high goals that we'd like to set. The type four is called the individualist or the romantic. And what this is, is they want to be so unique and different from other people. And this is really what drives them. They're more emotional, but it's this beautiful emotion. A lot of fours are artists from music, being in movies, and incredible creators because they tap into this emotional side that a lot of people don't even know how to. Have you ever listened to a song and the lyrics just hit you so hard? And you're like, "I never could have even come up with those words" - it was probably a type four. Yep. So they're beautiful individuals like it's so cool, then the type five so that's My husband, they're called the thinker, the investigator, and they are more introverted, they're quiet. They're really deep thinkers. They are so smart. They're literal geniuses. I think of Bill Gates, like he's probably a type five. So that's type fives for you. And then the type six is called the loyalist, and their biggest desire in life is to be loyal to other people so that they're loyal in return to them. And they really want to have these communities and tight groups of individuals. And they often can get caught up in fear and thinking of worst case scenario thinking. So there's a core weakness in every single type, which would take a little bit to go through. But yeah, that's what the six is. Then the seven is called the enthusiast. This individual is really energetic. They're extremely outgoing. And they're the friends that want to go on adventures like 24/7, so like, my type seven friends will call me and be like, "Hey, want to take a road trip tomorrow?" And I'm like, "holy crap, no, that's not my schedule," but they're very spontaneous. They love it. And they're truly full of life and joy and energy, then the type eight, this is called the challenger. And these individuals, you guys, if you're listening and you're a type eight, you're going to know yourself when I describe this, or you'll think of the people in your life. But they're the ones who are extremely blunt. And they might say something, and you and I might be like, "Holy smokes, did they just say that?" but they don't think anything of it. They're just being so real and authentic. And that's who they are. And they're going to say it for how it is. And it's beautiful, because they really can create a path for people who might be scared to speak up, and they are going to tread the difficult waters of where people may not want to go. They really have a deep desire for justice. And so they're very blunt. They're very strong personalities and extremely disciplined. And so then that brings us to the last one, the type nine, which is called the peacemaker. And the title is perfect. They desire peace, they hate being in conflict or tension with anyone and so they're really good at seeing the perspectives of everyone in their world. And so what they do is they seek peace in every circumstance. So if I was talking to a friend who's a type nine, and I'm like, "Hey, where do you want to go get lunch?" she's gonna be like, "Oh, I don't care, you pick" because she doesn't want to create any conflict. And she'll truly sacrifice that, where someone else like eight is definitely going to have an opinion of where they want to go eat. And nothing's wrong with either. It just shows you how we're all so different and what we're motivated by. So that is just a quick little snippet of the different nine types.
Thank you for going through all of those. Do you see some people in businesses teach different ways based on how their clients are? If they're clients who are type two, type three, or type four? Is that something you'd recommend? Do you have any tools or anything that you'd you've seen people do things people have done?
Yeah, you're saying to help them understand their clients even better. That's fine. And yeah, that is such a good question. And the first best thing to do is start learning about the enneagram yourself. Because even if you can't type your clients, or maybe your business isn't in a place where you can go "here let's talk about the enneagram" you can still have an understanding by people's language. Not that you're going to type them but at least understanding whether they're more introverted or they really care about peace or pleasing people. And it's going to help you speak to them. So an example in my business is if i'm coaching a type two versus a type nine, I can give the type two more specific goals and really hold her accountable to that and give her different strategies than I would a type nine because that's actually gonna shut them down. And so that's been so fun to apply to my coaching because how you handle money, how you handle anxiety, or even like what time you wake up in the morning is different based on different types. And it's really relieving when you start to understand that knowledge because your clients are gonna be like, "Nothing's wrong with me? It's okay for me to do it in this way?" And they start to build their confidence into continue to step forward and what they're trying to achieve. So, yes, I think it's extremely helpful. It also gives you and your client a common language, if you guys know that enneagram and can talk about it. Especially for a business owner or anyone listening. When you understand your gifts, you can fully step into that. So my husband's an entrepreneur, but the way he runs his business and the way I run my business is 1,000% different. But we're both extremely successful. And it's a good thing. It's that he's learned how to use his five strengths. And I've learned how to use my three strengths. And if I tried to run my business like his I literally would fail and vice versa. He would crumble at how many people I talked to a day. He does not get filled by that and that's okay. But when you learn how to run your business in that way, you're going to show up for your own clients so much better and they're going to feel that from you. So yeah, practical tip, start learning about it. Read a book. There's so many great podcasts about the enneagram like I have one it's called Living enneagram. Ian Crone has one. And you can just start to learn about The different types and how they think and feel. And that's a great free way just to get interested in how the enneagram really can apply to your business.
Yeah, I think that's such an important message that you've been tapping into throughout the whole podcast episode today is that it's okay if you do things differently than somebody else. And I think a lot of, especially entrepreneurs in the business world, they might see my business and be like, "Oh, I need to do it just like Melissa in order to be successful," that isn't the case at all. And there's just so much. Everything that you do in life is exactly how you do things in business. And I think knowing your enneagram would be so beneficial in your life and your business.
Because it gets so messy when you're trying to be someone else. And I've done that. For the longest time I was trying to run Instagram the way I saw other people doing it, which worked for them. They were doing it right and they were teaching what worked for them. But when I finally stopped trying to be like everyone else and just started doing it in my own way, that's when my account blew up. And it was like, oh, it should be this easy. But I was making it so hard by trying to be like other people. So yeah, I love that you circled back to that because it is so important.
Yeah, it definitely is so important. So I know I've taken tests before. I've taken them over and over and over. There's some tests out there to learn where your enneagram is in books and things like that. I think that you have something; you have a tool or product guide that helps you actually discover what their enneagram is, right? Can you share what that is with us?
Yeah, so when I first took a test, I scored as a type seven, and then as a type eight. Yeah, so tests are 50 to 80 percent accurate. and that's why oftentimes I tell my clients not to take a test because sometimes it can be harmful. Now, some people take it and you read it in you're like, that's 1,000% me so that was probably you, Melissa. Type two. It was like yes. But if you miss type yourself, it can just become more confusing and shut people down with the enneagram. And so I don't recommend taking a test. And then for so long people are like, Callie, how do I figure out my type? And I would direct them to like books and podcasts because you're the one that defines your type after you learn about it. But people don't go on that whole journey of getting their masters. They're like, just tell me my freakin type. So, recently, I'm so excited about this product! I created a product and it is the exact process I go through with my one on one clients. So if I was on a call with you, we would go through a series of questions, and I would educate you about all nine types. And we would really dive deep into your motivation, how you handle conflict, and what do you lead with? Your gut, your heart, or your head? And we would dig into that. And that's how I confidently help my clients figure out their type and we get it 100% and it's just easier to have someone who's certified to walk you through that. So I was like, "how can I create this?" and I did it in the little training. It's only 14.99, absolute lowest ticket item price item I've ever had. And it's how to confidently discover your type. You get to go through it at your own pace. And I walk through it. There's video trainings, right? I'm teaching you, I'm helping you understand what questions to ask yourself and how to answer it. We figure out your type together. And I'm just happy that it's like not a test because sometimes you feel lonely when you take a test. And then you start reading the results. And especially when someone doesn't understand it, it's like, "what the heck does all this mean?"
And so, yeah, I created that tool. And if your audience is interested in figuring out their type and starting this process, you can just go to Callieammons.com/mytype or I'm sure Melissa will link it below. But that's a great way or just starting to listen to podcasts and read books really can help you. That's just going to be a little bit longer of a process.
That's incredible. We'll definitely link that. I think it's so cool. I know I love watching video training and things like that. I personally prefer that over taking tests. To pass a test was so like high school and college back in the day. I don't even do that right now. I'm an adult, i'm gonna hit 30, I don't want to take any more tests.
I agree sometimes like the questions like I overthink it. I'm like, but I'm five of these answers. Like, I don't know how to answer this.
Yeah, well I'll go through that test. And sometimes they repeat questions but still change one tiny word but it's the same question. And I'll answer differently. Because i'm overthinking. And I'm like, "Oh, my goodness."
Right. I know. And you start getting sweaty. Yeah. I'm with you. And that's why I created the training because I'm the same. It's like, I want someone to walk through it with me. And especially someone who knows what they're talking about. Because when you read stuff, there's so much room for misinterpretation of like, "what does this actually mean?" And when we go back to thinking about the enneagram is about your internal world so like you and I both could check the same box of like, Yes, I like waking up early. Yes, I'm ambitious. Yes, I like setting goals. But again, you and I are doing it for different reasons. And that's where the confusion comes in. Externally, you can look the same as other types, but internally, it's different. And so it's just really hard to take a test on your internal world. I can't wait for people to see your product. That's amazing. Now, if someone's wanting a little bit of a deeper dive, what about one on one coaching? Do you have spots open? What's that kind of look like? Yeah, I do still have some spots open right now. You can DM me on Instagram if you're interested, or go to my website and you can see all about it. But in my one on one coaching, I work with my clients for three months at a time. We make sure you know your enneagram type, I help you figure that out if you don't know it. And then we figure out how we apply this to your life so you can level up your life. So if you're feeling stuck in your morning routine, in your business, in your finances, in your relationships; there's a reason. It's not random. And the enneagram can help you understand that. And I use that to help you understand how we apply this to your life. I create frameworks and strategies around that. That's my guess as a three. I'm such a nerd with that! I love helping people practically know what to do so they can achieve freedom. It doesn't have to feel random, you can have the roadmap to success and know how to apply this tool to your life. And that's what I do in the three months.
Oh, that sounds so incredible. Now to wrap this up, you're actually the first that I'm doing this with. So we are going to be doing a fun favorite so that we can learn a little bit more about you and just who you are. So we're going to dive into that, like the first thing that comes to mind when I run through these. Are you ready?
I'm ready. I'm nervous. But let's go.
Okay, what is your favorite book right now or all together? Which favorite book comes to mind?
Yeah, I would say it's called 'What to Say When You Talk to Yourself' and it's all about mindset. It transformed my life. It's really good.
I haven't read that. I'll need to add that to my list!
Add it to your list. It's So good. I'm going to read it once a year just because it's that good that I need a refresher.
But yeah, you know books are good when you go back to them every year multiple times a year. I love that. Yep. Okay, favorite TV show?
Okay, I'm a nerd. I literally don't watch TV shows. I watch a movie sometimes. So I can't tell you the last time I watched a TV show but favorite movie recently: Frozen 2. I love that movie so much.
I haven't watched it.
It's so cute. Melissa, you need to watch it.
Okay, I bet you it's probably under Disney+, We're doing a mini quarantine this weekend. Yes, we're still in COVID. Ill add it to my list this weekend. Do it. Yes. Okay, favorite artist or band?
Okay, NF he's actually a rapper and I love his music. He's probably a type four. His lyrics are incredible.
Oh, I don't know him. But I bet you my boyfriend does. He's really into rap. Okay, he's Yeah, he's incredibly talented and his lyrics are so Good. I'll go out there today because we're both working from home right now because COVID but i'll go out there like "Hey, have you heard NF's new song?"
Okay, favorite travel destination.
Okay, I haven't gone here yet but Hawaii like I really want to go to Hawaii. That is my goal. Have you been?
I have been quite a few times but then my sister just got a new job transfer. Yeah, so she's going over there in August. I'm gonna be going over there quite a bit more, but i’ve been there a few times.
That's awesome. Now you have a perfect excuse. Gotta visit my sis.
Perfect excuse and i'll have a place to stay. There's no reason not to go. I can't wait. Okay, last fun, favorite. What is your favorite self care?
Hmm, I'm like “there's so many.” This is something I've really worked on. Honestly, I would say it's probably journaling. Which sounds kind of nerdy, but I just love getting real with my thoughts every day or dreaming really big by writing audacious goals down and I do that every morning and I look forward to it. It just brings me so much joy.
I love that so much. So again, Callie, how can my audience get in touch with you? They want that product and we'll have links and things like that, but any other ways that they can get in touch with you?
Yeah, the best way is Instagram, I hang out there pretty much every single day. So you can find me @CallieAmmons or you can go to Callieammons.com. And on my website, you can find my podcast, my coaching, you can figure out your enneagram type all of that over there.
