3 Ways to Sell in Your Business
By: Melissa Lin
Welcome back to another episode of The Fierce Business Babe Podcast! We are back for another brand new episode and we are going to be diving into a topic that I absolutely love chatting about. This is something I do every single day in my business and support my clients with. Do you have any guesses? Yes, it’s sales! I actually asked my audience on Instagram last week if there was anything else they wanted to learn about here on the podcast. We have over 200 episodes now, absolutely wild. If you haven't listened to many episodes in the past, I highly recommend giving some a listen. I have an episode where I dove into the top three episodes I would recommend starting with depending on where you are in your business. If you're wanting to find that, send me a message on Instagram and I can send you the link for it.
So again, I asked my audience on Instagram what they wanted to learn more about on my podcast and one of the biggest things that came up was sales. So many people come to me on social media and share with me that they love the way that I sell and they love seeing how I'm able to sell often without it coming across the wrong way. We're going to get into three different ways you can sell in your business today. I want to chat about sales for a little bit. I’ve chatted about sales mindset for quite a few different podcast episodes and just different variations of it. We actually recently released a summer sales mindset podcast episode a few episodes ago, so I highly recommend that. If you're wanting to feel better about sales and start to shift your mindset around sales, it's definitely step one. We get to feel good about selling before we actually go and do it. Strategies will not work unless you've done some of that mindset work. So, we're going to be getting into so many fun things today. We’re going to get into how often to be selling throughout the week in your business, some ways to sell in your business today, tips to stay consistent with selling more often, and so much more.
How Often You Should Sell
The first thing I want to get into is how often to be selling in your business. Spoiler alert, I sell everyday in my business. Selling is a huge non-negotiable for me. If you're not selling and making money, if you're not bringing people into your offers, you really have more of a hobby than a business. Sales get to come in, you get to have that energy exchange for it. Anytime that I share with my audience or my clients that I sell as often as I do, a few things come up. Sometimes they're scared to sell because they don't want to come across the wrong way. That’s a sales mindset thing right there, so again I recommend listening to my Summer 2022 Sales Mindset podcast episode from a few episodes ago. Another thing that comes up, and I was talking to a client about this today, is they get the sense that any time they are selling on their social media platforms that people can feel they're about to get sold to. They feel like they aren't allowed to sell on their social media platform or ask for the sale. The way that I really supported my client with this was kind of talking it through. We really cannot control what others do or how others feel. We can’t make the assumption for them that they feel they're about to be sold to. If we’re making that assumption for them and have the story that they know they're about to be sold to, this is actually a limiting belief of yours; this is a form of you projecting. Maybe you were sold to in a way that didn’t feel good to you and you’re worried when you sell that it’s going to come across that same way. That’s a story of yours, a limiting belief of yours.
Another thing that came up was so many people are scared to sell because they feel they're selling too much. Something I can share with you is that if you’re only posting about your offer once every two weeks, or even once a week, I can almost guarantee that people are not seeing it. More and more people are coming into the online space every single day starting their businesses and need your guidance. If you're worried you're selling too much, I can promise that you're not. Unless you're hopping on your Instagram stories every 60 seconds and selling, you are not selling too much. You are most likely not selling enough. Not everyone's going to see every form of selling that you do. People need to see your offer a minimum of seven to ten times before they take action. To be honest, it’s starting to trend upward. It’s starting to get into the 10 to 20 times minimum before they take action. You get to sell often. What I believe to be true is that you need to get your offer out there because selling is serving. People cannot buy from you or get that transformation or that result they're looking for unless they know what you have to offer.
Another question I get pretty often from folks in my audiences is, how do you know how to balance selling versus educational content versus inspirational content in your messaging? What I've always believed is that your value is your pitch. At the end of the day, if you are adding value and coming from a place of service, your audience is going to be blown away. They’re going to be coming to you with that thought of, “ wow, if this is what Melissa provides for free, I can’t even imagine what her programs are going to be like.” For example, I've done so many free trainings, I’ve done over 200 podcast episodes, and we have people coming to me on social media sharing that they’ve signed new clients just from my podcast alone. They've signed multiple high ticket clients, they’ve doubled their business revenue from some of our free content that we've done. If you're able to add value, then that gets to be your pitch at the end of the day. Really come from a place of service and add value. These are actually two of my biggest non-negotiables in my business, adding value and selling.
One of my clients in a call this week also asked what my rule of thumb was in terms of that balance of value versus sales and other content. My rule of thumb is about 80% value content and then about 20% of sales content, that's what feels good to me. You've got to find a balance that feels good to you. I would not recommend 100% selling because people need to like, know, and trust you. People need to get to know you before they can be sold to. People need to have multiple touch points with you and really trust you. So again, if you’re only talking about your offer once every two weeks, I guarantee that your audience does not know about it. We get to show up and add value every single day. This may sound overwhelming. If doing it every single day is too much, I totally get that, I've been there too. Most of our clients in our Academy starting their businesses are also their 9 to 5. Start with something sustainable. Start to sell twice a week.
You can also create and repurpose graphics so you're not needing to create something new every time you want to sell. If you go and take a look at my Instagram stories this week, watch what I do. We have graphics and some of our graphics are very consistent from month to month. For example, at least once a week I will share a few graphics of ways to work with me in the month of August. Then next month it will be ways to work with me in the month of September. Again, it’s the same graphic, we just change it depending on what our offers are for the month. Make it easier, don't overcomplicate when it doesn't need to be complicated. Talk about your offer. Ask for the sale. Share in various ways and sell as often as you can.
Selling isn't just you hopping on Instagram stories and saying, “hey I’m a coach come work with me.” I recently spent quite a few days away from social media because I was packing my old house and getting ready for our new house, so we had a lot of content pre-scheduled. We were still showing up and adding value. It does not need to be live every single day, you're allowed to pre-schedule. You're allowed to repurpose. Get your programs out there and sell, sell, sell. There are dozens of different sales activities that you can do and we're about to get into just a few of them. I want to remind you, people cannot buy from you or work with you unless they know what you have to offer. Selling a serving. Get out there and sell today. If you haven't sold yet, I'm about to give you three ways to do so, so get your pen and paper ready to go.
Sales Activities You Can Do Today
There are dozens of different sales activities you can do in your business throughout the week and here are three for you. The first is some type of email. The beautiful thing about email is that you can pre-schedule all of this. I recommend that you pre-schedule all of your emails. Email something to your list today that is a value price. Here's a little spoiler, if you want to you can also repurpose an older Instagram caption. We do this a lot. We’ll repurpose an older Instagram caption and also send out ways to work with us that month or that week. The reason that I say repurpose something that you already have is because not everyone in your social network is going to see your emails. Not everyone in your email list is going to see your social media. I had a client who avoided emails because she had the story that email marketing didn't exist anymore and that no one opens emails anymore. I really challenged her to step out of her comfort zone and send out a sales email and the very next day she signed two brand new clients who came directly from her email list. Email marketing is still a thing, it's not going anywhere. After losing my Instagram account earlier this year, something I can share with you is that your email list is the only thing that you actually own. If social media were to disappear tomorrow, which is very unlikely, however it could, all you would have is your email list. We’ve already had multiple days this year where social media was down for the day. When that happens you're not able to sell to your audience unless you have your email list to sell to. Send out an email with a value piece to your list, plus a quick p.s. at the bottom of your email with ways to work with you. So that's the first way that you can sell to your audience today in your business.
The second way is to go and share your social proof in your Instagram stories. We did this a day or two ago, we do this every single week. Share some social proof, some testimonials. Ask your audience to DM you a certain word to learn how they can be your next success story. We shared some social testimonials and then had a slide saying, “if you want to be our next success story, you can send me a DM with the words ‘next level’ so we can start to put your game plan together to help you start to really grow your business.” So the second way you can sell today is to share a social proof in your stories and ask your audience to DM you a certain word. What I love about this is that it allows your leads to identify themselves for you, which makes it so much easier. I love asking my leads to self identify themselves.
The third way you can make a sale today is to go ahead and put out a value piece. This could be an educational piece or maybe a caption on whatever social media platform you’re on. Share a piece of value in your feed and add a call to action. This may look like telling your audience to click the link in your bio to apply for your program.
I wanted to specifically give you these three ideas to sell in your business today because people need different permission slips. Some people will only see your email, so go and sell there. Some people will only see your Instagram stories today, so go sell there too. You cannot spell too much. I mentioned earlier that the only way you could be selling too much is if you’re on your Instagram stories selling every 60 seconds, that is probably too much. If you’re selling more than your value, we may want to take a look at that balance. Again, my rule of thumb is about 80/20.
Tips to Sell More Often
Now that you have a few ways to sell in your business today I want to give you a few tips to help you with selling more often. Again, selling is a huge non-negotiable for me and my business. I sell every single day, multiple ways per day. Something that you can do is add it into your daily routine. If you use a project management tool, we use Asana and Airtable, add it into your daily task list of things to do. You get to do some type of sales activity today. Pick a time every day and add in 15 minutes of selling. Let's say, for example, after lunch every single day you're going to go and spend 15 minutes choosing one sales activity minimum in your business. If you haven't sold yet today, you get to get out there and sell today. We want to make sure that you feel good about it. Let's definitely work on sales mindset if it doesn't feel good. You can check out that podcast episode I shared a few episodes ago about sales mindset in 2022 and find a way to have fun with it.
I think one of the biggest reasons I love selling so much is because I know that I'm creating an impact. I know and I deeply believe that spelling is serving and selling is helping. I absolutely love to sell because I love sharing my offers and helping others connect with the offer that's going to help them get the results they are looking for. Find a way to have fun with it and really fall in love with it. At the end of the day, you are a business, you get to sell. If sales isn't something that you absolutely thrive on and love like I do, it is something that you eventually outsource. I personally don't do sales calls anymore. I have not done a sales call in over three years in my business. I have shifted away from sales calls and I also don't have team members who do them. I know a lot of business owners will have a team of sales call folks and you definitely can go that way down the road. Maybe I'll do an entire podcast episode about how to delegate your sales if sales isn’t something that you thrive in and love. I first want you to get comfortable with it and also learn how to sell because if you do eventually hire or delegate that process, you will need to do some teaching and training around the way that you sell in your business. We want to first get into the habit of selling a little bit more often in your business. Go and sell today, especially if you haven’t sold today. Get out there and sell something. If you have sold today, go sell something else. Go do a different sales activity, whether it's an email or one of the other two that I shared with you.
We have touched on so much today.
