What Does Affiliate Commission Look Like?

By: Melissa Lin

Welcome back to another episode of The Fierce Business Babe Podcast! I hope you are having an amazing week. This episode is releasing on a Thursday, so hopefully you are wrapping up some exciting stuff and also getting ready for a fun weekend! We are here for another brand new Thursday episode. These are shorter style episodes that I am calling the Fierce Business Q&A. It is a mini episode for you answering one question that a client asked. Each week my team pulls a question that a client asked in one of our programs, and I'm going to go into full detail on how we answered the question and supported our clients. So yes, you will also be receiving the same full on coaching right here, right now. Let's dive in.

This week's question is, what does affiliate commission look like? This was pulled from my higher-level mastermind, Fiercely Scale. This is my 6-month high-level hybrid that's been around for a little over a year now. It's a hybrid one-on-one and group container where I help my clients scale from six figures to multiple six figures. This is actually the only container at the moment where you also receive full private coaching with me, so I’m in your back pocket with private Voxer access every single day. So again, the question is, what does affiliate commission look like? Now the way that we support our clients in this container is with monthly group coaching calls where we dive deep into content, share screens, and go behind the scenes. That's one of my favorite things about our programs, I think it’s one of the coolest things about how I run my programs. I know when I was starting and growing my business I always wanted to know what a six-figure, multiple six-figure, or seven-figure business actually looked like, so I love showing behind the scenes of our business with our clients so that we can also support them into the next level. We also put together action steps for them to move forward. We have daily private Voxer access, as I mentioned earlier, group Voxer to Mastermind with the other women, monthly private calls with me, and monthly private calls with my team members and my actual ads manager that I used to support my business as well. It's also the only container where my team members are heavily involved and really support you in the behind the scenes of your business and with moving things forward. Clients in this program also have access to my entire course hub, all of my past programs, and, of course, their own training hub as well for Fiercely Scale. It's literally VIP with me. It’s so much fun, I love this container. The way that we supported this client with this question was the same day in Voxer. We also helped and supported them with putting their own affiliate plan together and how to do a behind-the-scenes step-by-step. I'm actually in Voxer and Slack multiple times per day in all of my programs. It truly is one of my favorite parts of the day, that's why I'm so excited to share and support this question and this answer.

Again, the question was, what does affiliate commission look like? This typically looks a little different depending on the type of program that you're pushing out there. Maybe you have an affiliate program with your one-on-one coaching, or maybe you've got some for your group coaching program, or courses, or digital products. Typically for one-on-one or group programs this may look like a percentage or a flat fee that's given to affiliates that bring new sales in for you. I would recommend anywhere from 5 to 10% or a flat fee. Typically with affiliate sales the affiliate does take care of the sales process, and I'll go into an example of when sometimes it doesn't necessarily support the entire sales process in just a second, but let's get the courses first. For courses this can range anywhere from 20 to 50%, and I want to share why it's such a different range. When it comes to courses there's not nearly as much hands-on support from the creator of the course. This also depends on the intention behind the push of the course. For example, if we have affiliates for any of our lower ticket courses, we would actually lean towards 40 to 50% affiliate commission because the intent is, yes to sell the course, however, the bigger goal is to then upsell everybody into our higher-level coaching programs to get that hands-on experience with myself, my team, and the accountability and support to continue to move the needle forward.

There are definitely a few ways to look at affiliate commissions and I wanted to give you a few ideas there. If for some reason the sales process isn't completely hands-on, this typically would be more of a referral process than an affiliate process. If, for example, you do need to do some work on your end, let's say people are sent your way because somebody referred or maybe an affiliate sent them your way and you still need to hop on a sales call, or you still need to go back and forth to convert and close the sale, then you may need to adjust that percentage. I’ve seen some cases where that percentage may be lower. If you as the business owner are still hopping on the sales calls to close it off, maybe in that case it's a flat fee instead of a percentage of 5% or 10% across-the-board. It’s totally up to you and what feels good to you and your business.

I want to give you a quick bonus here before we wrap up. Here are some additional things that you may want to consider creating for your affiliates if you do create an affiliate program for one of your courses or for something else that you have in your business. You want to create some graphics that they can use, some social media copy or some email copy that they can then send out to their audience. It’s really just an easy way for the affiliates to bring people your way. We use Thrivecart, a check out processor, and it has its own affiliate system inside of it. It makes it very easy for us to set our affiliates up. Again, lots of different things you can do. Let's support your affiliates as much as possible. We get to make it as easy as possible for them. I’ve definitely seen in the past that some will create Facebook groups for their affiliates and also teach them how to sell as their affiliates, that sort of thing. So again, just providing them the support and what to do, how to do it, how to show up, and how to also sell your offers for you. The more support you can give them the better it's going to be for you and the sales that you'll see.

Go ahead and send me a DM over on Instagram. If you aren't following me on my new account yet, my new account is the_melissalin since our old account was hacked unfortunately. The new account is there and I am there. If you have a quick question go ahead and send me one quick question that you're stuck on your business and I'll personally send you a voice message response with how to move the needle forward. You know that my team is already getting ready to pull the next question from one of our programs and I cannot wait to answer it on next week’s episode of The Fierce Business Q&A that is hosted on the Fierce Business Babe Podcast.
