When to Ask for a Client Testimonial?

By: Melissa Lin

Welcome back to another episode of the Fierce Business Babe Podcast! We are here for another brand new Thursday episode. I cannot believe it is the end of March today. This is the first month that we started dropping the second mini episodes for you that we're calling the Fierce Business Q&A Podcast episodes. These are a new shorter style episode. We started them this month and they will be continuing next month as well, so get ready for those. In these episodes I will be answering one question that a client asked. Each week my team pulls a question that a client asked in one of our programs and I go into full detail on how we answered the question and supported our client. So yes, we’re going to be giving you full on coaching right here, right now. This week's question was pulled from my program The Six-Figure Fierce Business Mastermind. The question today is, when to ask for a client testimonial?

This question was pulled from my mastermind, which is my 6-month mastermind where we help you scale to the consistent $10K month mark in your business while working less. We focus heavily on both the front and back end of your business to turn your business into a well-oiled machine so that you can continue to grow without the hustle and without the burnout because that's the goal for so many of us. So again, the client asked, when to ask a client for a testimonial? The ways that we support our clients in this container specifically are with monthly group coaching calls where I dive deep into content, share screens with clients, share behind the scenes of our business and their business, put together action steps for them to move forward, a Slack channel to ask questions every single day, and unlimited feedback on all things in their business. We also have so many templates for them, private coaching calls with a support coach, and also some private coaching calls with myself, and then access to all of our other programs and courses. My clients get everything and more, including an entire course for the mastermind.

The way we supported this client with this question was directly in Slack the same day. We answered this question within a few hours. I'm in there multiple times per day supporting my clients personally. Let's get into answering the actual question, when to ask for a client testimonial? This is going to depend on the length of the program and also what the rest of your offboarding process may look like. For example, let's say for one of my shorter length group programs is a 12-week program, so for the three months. I would reach out and ask for a client testimonial around week nine or ten. Typically, I recommend asking for a testimonial first before the rest of your offboarding process. This will then give you weeks 11 and 12 to chat with your client about resigning and what next steps can look like if they want to continue working with you. Now, let's say for a longer length program, maybe a 6-month program, you may want to ask for that client testimonial at the beginning of the fifth month. This gives you some time to hop on a call to chat about re-signing or upgrading to the next program.

Again, it really depends on what your offboarding process looks like. You may want to give it more time if you do need to hop on a call and chat about those next steps if it is a higher-level investment. Again, it can be anytime in there, it can be that last month, it can definitely be the last two weeks just like that example for that 3-month program that I provided just a minute ago. You really just want to make sure that your client has had enough time to go through your program and also see some results. It wouldn't make sense to ask them for a client testimonial in week two unless they are having some big wins very early on. If they are having some big wins very early on, definitely go in and ask for that testimony. You can do so multiple times, it's not a one-and-done deal. You are allowed to ask for a testimonial more than once and screenshot wins and things like that as well. It's always great to celebrate your clients when they are having those wins. Your clients absolutely love you and they're definitely going to support you. They’re going to want to support you and provide you with those testimonials, so definitely add that into your off boarding process.

When my client asked me this question we also shared some example questions that you can ask in a testimonial, so I'll share that with you here as a bonus. I love adding in those quick tips for you. If you do want to ask a client for a testimonial, here are some example questions that you can give them. I always recommend giving your client as much as possible in terms of what you're looking for. So if you're looking for what the impact was or what the income wins were, be very transparent. Be very open and let them know directly what those questions are. So for example, you can ask these next four questions. Where were you before coming to me or before working with me? Where are you now? How has it been working with me or what's your experience been working with me? What would you tell somebody on the fence? There are four quick questions that you can add in there. If you're looking for a written testimonial or a video testimonial be really clear with what it is that you're looking for so that your client can give that to you. Again, they do want to support you. They want to give you what's going to support you and your business. Those are just a few examples, there are definitely more questions that you can ask. We have quite a list of things that we ask our clients in their testimonials during their ofboard process. If you have any questions, feel free to go ahead and send me a DM over on Instagram. My new Instagram handle is the_melissalin. Send me one quick question that you're stuck on in your business and I’ll personally send you a voice message back supporting you with that question and how to move the needle forward.
