How to Handle Friends Not Supporting My Business
By: Melissa Lin
Welcome back to another episode of The Fierce Business Babe Podcast! We are here for another brand new Thursday episode. These are a new shorter style episode that I am calling the Fierce Business Q&A. It is a mini episode for you answering one question that a client asked. So this is how it's going to work, each week my team pulls a question that a client asked in one of our programs and I will be going into full detail on how we answered the question and supported our client. So yes, we are providing full on coaching for you right here, right now. Now, this week's question was actually pulled from my signature program The Fierce Business Academy. In this program we help you start, build, and scale your online business to $5K months. The question this week was, how to handle friends not supporting my business? The ways that we support our clients in this container are with weekly group coaching calls where we dive deep into content, share screens, show behind the scenes, and put together action steps for clients to move forward. We have a Slack channel to ask questions every single day, seven days a week, and an entire training library with over 20 hours of material to go through that they also get lifetime access to. When this question was asked we supported the client the same day inside of our Slack channel. I'm in there multiple times per day every single day of the week supporting clients personally. Now let's get to answering today's question.
Again, today’s question is, how to handle friends not supporting my business? This also includes family, loved ones, friends, colleagues, anybody who doesn't support your business. I can definitely relate, and I'll share an example story with you as well. One thing I do want to start with is that you can accomplish anything and everything that you put your mind to. Your success is inevitable at the end of the day. I can relate to not being supported. When I first started my coaching business neither of my parents really understood. What I know to be true is that, first, I wanted a completely different life than what they had created for themselves, and that's totally okay. Second, I could no longer take some pieces of advice from those that aren't living the lifestyle I was striving for, it just didn't make sense. What I will say is to continue to surround yourself with other like-minded entrepreneurs, other like-minded women. We're here to cheer you on and support you. You can handle anything that comes your way. You're also just getting started, there's so much more to do, and I'm so excited for you. I can also share that it's not easy to hear that the people closest to you may not trust your decisions or believe that you can do it. Just know that the other people's opinions of you have nothing to do with you, that has everything to do with them. It says nothing about you, your worthiness, how your business is going to perform, how it's going to be, or how it is now.
When I first left my engineering job to go full-time in my business one of my closest friends actually shared with me that they did not believe I was making the right decision. They believed that I would be better off staying in my 9-to-5. Less than a year later that same friend reached out and said that they were so proud of everything I had created. They actually wished they had the courage to leave their 9-to-5 and start their own business and basically do what I had done from the time when they made that first statement. If others are putting you down or telling you that you can't do something, they are pushing their fears and their limiting beliefs onto you, they're projecting. This is one of the many reasons why mindset at work is so important all throughout entrepreneurship. It’s something that you get to work on daily. Believe in you. At the end of the day, believe in yourself, even if somebody else doesn't, even if your friends don't, if family doesn’t. They don't necessarily need to get it. Surround yourself with those that do. Surround yourself with people that are going to lift you higher. Your success is inevitable if you keep going. If you believe in yourself and really surround yourself with others who truly get it and want to cheer you on, be there, and challenge you and push you to be your greatest. Believe in you, regardless of what anyone else says. At the end of the day you can accomplish anything that you want to. You get to create the life of your dreams, not somebody else's dreams.
So that is the answer to today’s question. You can handle anything that comes your way. It says nothing about you and nothing about your business. They are projecting their fears and their limiting beliefs onto you. You get to just believe in you. Stay in your lane and do your thing.
