What to Focus on in Your Business to Grow

By: Melissa Lin

Welcome back! Today we're going to be focusing on something that is going to support you and your business, no matter what level you're at right now. If you are just starting your business, this is going to support you. If you have already seen some success in your business and are looking to take things to the next level, this episode is going to support you. If you're really looking to scale, this episode is also going to support you. I've been in each of these levels in the past myself, so I know some of the real things that happen behind the scenes and some of the real struggles as an entrepreneur.

When I first started my business, there were goals that felt so far away from me. Hitting a $10K month felt impossible; hitting a $20K month felt impossible. Reaching a $50K month was out of this world, I didn't even think that was possible. Now, $50-$100K months is normal in my business. I want to share some insights that helped me continue to move into the next level and create those massive results.

Your Business Goals

So, how can you create those next level results? Before we dive into some of those tangibles and action items for you, I really want you to ask yourself, what does my next level look like? What is that going to bring you? How is that going to make you feel? Are you wanting more money in your savings account? Are you wanting more Chanel bags? Do you want to be able to create your own schedule? It is possible for that to happen for you.

Choose a goal that feels in reach. I definitely recommend choosing smaller goals and working towards that big goal. If you are just starting your business right now and you're telling yourself that you want to hit $100K months, that is going to feel so far away. Start a little smaller. Start with hitting $10K months and then build up. You want to feel like you're winning as you're growing your business. Decide on your goal, and then we get to make a plan to help you get there.

There are so many different strategies out there that work. There's no one secret strategy that's the only one that's going to work. You get to choose a strategy that's aligned with how you want your business to run as you continue to grow it. Any strategy can work if you give it the time. I typically recommend giving a strategy anywhere from 60 to 90 days minimum before you change it. It’s also important to be consistent. Show up every single day and put in the work for the strategy. If you're only showing up on social media once a week, that is not consistency. You have to really lean in and show up every single day in your business. If you see yourself leaning away from social media every other week, you're not being social on social media. You get to be social. You get to be consistent.

As we continue to go into 2023, a big shift that we have started to see is really building on relationships and connecting with your audience. People are wanting more conversations. People are wanting to connect before taking that next step with us. Be open to really building relationships and adding more out there into your business model. You truly can have anything that you want, and it starts with you.

Planning in the Beginning Stages of Business

Now that we know that we get to decide what our goals are, it's time to make your plan. Let’s spend some time focusing on what that plan can look like for you. If you are in the very beginning stages of your business, maybe you've mapped out what your business model is going to look like, but you haven't signed any clients yet. What I see most who are in the very beginning stages do is stay busy. They almost distract themselves by doing things that aren't really moving the needle forward.

This may look like creating weeks worth of Instagram captions and graphics on Canva that they don't really need right now. I see a lot of entrepreneurs spending so much of their time on sales pages and websites. Yes, these are great things to have at some point, but they aren’t necessary in the very beginning stages. I didn't have a sales page or full website for my business until I was at $10K months. I see a lot of entrepreneurs spending a lot of time on back end creation planning. I see them spending time on future podcast creation when they don’t have a podcast yet. I see so many of them selling for less than 10% of their time in their business. If you're in the beginning stages, you get to be selling for 60-70% of your business day.

I sell every single day in multiple ways. So yes, you get to grow your audience. Yes, you get to connect with your audience. As I mentioned, this is huge for 2023. Create an incredible high-ticket offer. Then, learn to sell and do it consistently. You want to be selling and the only way for you to make sales in your business is to sell. You get to consistently talk about your offer. People need to see and hear about it a minimum of seven to ten times. Show up consistently, talk about your offers, add value, and handle objections. Talk to your audience. There are so many different ways to sell in your business. Let your audience know that you have something for them to buy; you have the solution to their problem. If you're in the beginning stages of your business, start getting really comfortable with selling. The only way to do that is to really practice. It's a skill that you get to practice and continue to improve.

Actions at the Intermediate Level

Now, let's say that you are a little beyond the beginner level. Maybe you've already started to see success in your business and you’re signing clients here and there. Maybe you're wanting to scale to $10K months in your business. The reason I am choosing this as the example is because there are a lot of differences between the beginning stage of starting and scaling to $5K, and then going into six figures and multiple six figures. There are challenges at each level and different things that get to shift at each level. I've experienced all of that. If you are wanting to scale to $10K months, what I see a lot of entrepreneurs doing is wearing so many different hats. They're creating their own content, doing all of the admin work behind the scenes, working 10-12 hour days. Everything feels chaotic.

To help balance that out, we get to shift into delegating and outsourcing. We get to move into the one-to-many instead of the one-to-one. This may look like group programs or courses. In order to really grow and scale your business, we get to move away from the one-woman show. That means hiring team members. You get to start to really grow your community as well. Growing your community is something that is going to continue in your business. That is something that will never go away. We're always wanting to grow our audience and get in front of more people.

Another important step is adding some type of systems into your business. I know sometimes the word system can scare some people. No matter what level you're at right now, you have some type of system in your business. The way that you post content on social media, you have a system for it right now. Maybe you map out your Instagram caption on your notepad and then you copy and paste that over into the Later app and schedule it to post. You have a system for how you're doing it, however, it's all hands on for you. We want to create a system where it’s hands-off for you, that way your business can handle the next level.

I have a few other things you may want to consider as you're wanting to grow and working towards scaling to $10K months in your business. The first is raising your rates. You are allowed to raise your rates whenever you feel like it. Another thing is asking yourself, which of my offers can I actually scale? What does that look like? It's most likely going to be difficult to scale a one-on-one program. However, you can turn that one-on-one program into a group program that is scalable. Turn it into a course that is scalable. Then, really hone in on your sales process. We want you to know exactly where your leads come from. How are those leads being nurtured? How are they being sold to? Your sales process is really important for growing your business. Your sales process is what gets to amplify for you to take things to the next level.

Scaling Beyond $10K Months

Now let's really shift into what the next level looks like. Even if you're in the beginning stages, I want to help give you a roadmap for what those next levels may look like for you. Maybe you've hit $10K months in your business and you're wanting to scale beyond that. What I see most entrepreneurs doing at this stage is a lot of organized chaos. They’re trying to get things done and living day by day in their business. Team members are starting to help in parts of their businesses, but their team members aren't really working together yet. Systems are kind of there, but they're not really ready for multiple six figures yet. They’re still trying to kind of micromanage, not letting go of things that should be delegated.

What I recommend shifting into is automation. It’s also important to consider how your program can be tweaked to help even more people. Is it ready for scaling? If I were to hand you 20 clients today for your current group program, does anything need to be tweaked? Can your program currently handle 20 onboards today? Can your current model handle it? If not, let's tweak it. If you're currently giving one-on-one coaching calls to every single client and I handed 20 new clients to you today, that would overload your calendar. So, some things do need to be tweaked in order for you to really grow and step into the next level. If I were to hand you 40 new clients today, what else would need to be tweaked? That's how you're going to start to prep things in your business for the next level. For you to really grow and scale, it's about you helping more people. In order for you to help more people, your business has to be able to support them. Organization is key.

Another thing you may want to consider is raising rates. Again, you get to raise rates whenever you want to. It’s also important to add in more support, more team members. This could be an OBM, an ads manager, support coaches, a VA, a sales team. You may also want to be creating more hands-off offers for your business so that you can be bringing in sales while you're sleeping. More passive income. You may want to consider handing your sales process off to team members so that you're not so hands-on in your sales process. Other things include creating bigger funnels in your business and getting in front of more and more people. You can do this by adding in more collaborations, press, advertisement, and networking events. There are lots of options to consider. I really want you to ask yourself, what needs to shift in my business model to grow?

We have touched on so much today. We got into how to shift your mindset, what your business needs as it grows, things to focus on at each level, and so much more. We are already getting ready for next week and cannot wait to share it with you. We will see you next week!
