Creating Your Content Calendar

By: Melissa Lin

Welcome back to another episode of The Fierce business babe podcast. We are here for a brand new episode and I'm so excited because we are going all into content creation, into how I create my content for the week, my content calendar, and so many other things and we have a lot of new people in my community. If you were one of them, a big, big, welcome I’m sending you so much love. I'm so excited you're here with me.

One of the big questions I got last week was Melissa, how do you create so much content? All of the time? And something that I first want to say is the amount of content I create now is not the same amount of content I created when I first started my business. I've been in business since 2014, I also have a team now, however, I've got tons of tips and tricks for you today and we're going to get into so many goodies. Now me and my team spend less than an hour per week putting out and putting our content calendar together. So yes less than an hour a week and I cannot wait to get into some of the specifics and tips for you to help reduce your time for content creation.

Creating Your Content Pillars

We're going to get all into your content pillars. How often to post content and how to map out your own content calendar. Tips to create content, with ease and sell so much more, and before we can get into anything about content calendars. I first want to talk to you about your content pillars in your business. So, no matter what stage you are in your business, you have content pillars and these are the things that you're always talking about and I want you to start to think about and ask yourself, okay? What are these topics for me? What are my main pillars? What are the main three to five topics that you're always sharing and teaching about? And they can even be core topics from your program. You sell your course if you have a story to write those out.

So for example, my main content pillars in my business include entrepreneurship sales, client attraction, mindset, my stories, social media and content, starting your business, and scaling your business. So what are yours? And for me to give you, your story will be a big hint and a pillar. But what are some of the other topics that you are always talking about? As we dive deeper into the episode you'll see how you can easily create 20 pieces of content today. And the first step is to know what your content pillars in your business actually are. So pause the episode and write yours down then continue. Once we know your content's pillars we can start to get into how to actually create your content calendar and I know that many of my audience is starting their businesses on the side, maybe while they're in their full time job or full-time in school. So creating content and finding time to do it can seem hard.

We get to be very intentional with your time because it's the one thing you really cannot get back. So we want to be intentional with it and something I wanted to start with. Especially if you're brand-new to social media, is it you do not need to post on social media 7 days a week. You definitely don't need to. It's not realistic, especially as you're getting started, not realistic, right? However, we do get to post sometimes and create some consistency and want you to ask yourself, okay? Realistically, how often can I consistently post? And I recommend starting with, at least three or four times minimum if more amazing. Let's create a routine around that. Let's build on top of that, but let's start with three or four and then start out on top of that. Once it is consistent and feels easy to do it.

Building A Content Bank

And as you start to build your content bank, this is something that I highly recommend but we actually have a contest bank where we store all of our content, all of our copy or graphics that sort of thing, right? So that we can just pull content and recycle and reuse and I'll get into that a little bit later, but we have templates for our clients and so they can easily do the same.

And what I want you to think about is okay, this is not necessarily that every single piece of content you create needs to be new for the rest of your business lifespan. You can definitely build on top of what you've already created and recycle. So still to this day, I am almost 10 years in the business. I still create new content whenever I feel inspired to create something new, when something really flows and comes to me, however, I do recycle a lot of my older content that way. I don't feel like I have to always create new content, it's more of whatever you've got that inspiration field to do so that we don't need to post 7 days a week.

The more you create content, the easier it will be to create and I also have some tools to help you with this such as my caption capsule. If you would like to grab the caption capsule you can do so in the show notes and feel free to use the code podcast to save $5 in today. So, now that we have an idea about how often you should be posting against something that is sustainable for you. We can always build on top of it, but start with something. Easy, sustainable, doable, last movement of a type of content to go to be posting.

What Type of Content To Post

I recommend posting on your feed at least one value piece each week. This is where you teach your audience something through your content. For example, you can provide the four steps of starting an online business, five boundaries to attend to your business, or the six daily items to add to your business. These pieces should add value to your feed each week. Additionally, I suggest adding at least one storytelling piece per week. This is where you share your experience, and your clients' experience, to create a connection between you, your audience, and your ideal client. An inspirational piece is also recommended each week. This type of content shows what is possible for others and is often behind-the-scenes of how you're living your life.

Finally, I suggest creating at least one sales piece each week. Without sales, you don't have a business, just a side hustle. It's critical to include sales content in your business, and it can take the form of a client testimonial with a call to action on how to apply for your program or how to book a sales call.

To map out your content, create a plan for each day of the week. Start with seven columns, one for each day, and write in the top of each column. For example, you can release a brand new podcast episode every Monday morning and then post educational or storytelling content on Tuesdays. You can also add the different content pillars you have and place them throughout the week. Make sure to keep your ideal client in mind when deciding when to post, and create themes based on what you're selling.

If you're struggling to come up with new content, repurpose, recycle, and reuse as often as possible. Take advantage of different forms of content, like podcasts or voice memos, to brainstorm ideas. Finally, have fun with it and find a way that works for you to make content creation easier.
