Top 5 Daily Business Items for 2020
By Melissa Lin
These 5 daily activities are the most important things to be focusing on in 2020. These are the things I truly believe everyone should be focusing on, no matter where you are in your business.
I'm not even counting this as one of the top five, we're just going to roll right into this and not waste any time. This is a non negotiable, something to be focusing on every day, and that’s taking care of your clients. Giving them support and taking care of them happens before anything else on your priority list. Kay? Okay good.
Now let's roll into some of the things that you should be focusing on daily in your business. These are things I wish I had known about when I first started my business. I wish that someone had reminded me about this a year ago and even now. I still remind myself about them over and over because they're definitely key items for you in every stage of your business.
So many of us think that to be super busy at work means to be very effective and have a productive day. But that's actually a general misconception. I'm not sure about you, but when I was in my nine to five I used to think about, how many people are sitting in their cubicles going through the news and checking social media and just doing things? They are checking emails, walking around and talking to people.
We're never busy eight hours of the day. We make ourselves look busy by doing little things, but we're not actually effective while we're doing it. If we were to sit down and actually work for eight hours straight, there'd be no reason for us to be there for eight hours. You’d get everything done.
So, to be busy doesn't necessarily mean that you're being effective and also to be effective doesn't mean to work all day long in nonstop mode. It's definitely not a necessity. I can tell you that because, in my multiple six figures business, I’m working less than 20 hours a week.
For example, business owners on social media are focusing on content creation, posting every day, making their website, adding graphics, all of those things. However, they're not spending much of their time, if any, creating sales activities. I actually did an Instagram story about this the other day and my DM just blew up because so many people were feeling like that's what they were doing.
Be intentional with your time. If you're sitting down to do a task, write a blog post, write your email sequence, podcast, whatever it is you're doing, be intentional. Turn off those distractions. Put your phone and iWatch on airplane mode. Do not disturb. Make sure that the TV isn't on in the background. Be intentional, be more effective, then go and enjoy without trying to do all this multitasking.
Your value is your pitch. And the one thing that I tell all of my clients is that selling isn't about getting, it's about giving. As a salesperson, your main job is to create value. I create value every single day for my tribe. Instagram posts, Instagram stories, live Facebook videos and my Facebook group with content that you can actually use in your business. Create value that people can use to help move them in the direction of changing lives, inspiring them, or moving that needle forward for them.
Value can be anything from an educational post, a motivational post, a free workout, a meal guide, a free five day challenge, a blueprint to your business, your top five tips to stop binge eating on the weekends, etc.
Give them some action items and things to do to move forward with. Whatever it is that you're wanting to help them with. If your goal is to create value first, you are not dependent on others, only on yourself. The goal is not to just be successful, the goal is to be valuable.
It's important every single day for a few reasons. Number one, it helps show your ideal clients the value that you can bring. They want stuff that is going to help them. And then number two, value is important because it also gives them a little glimpse into what it could be like working with you. They want a little taste of this before they commit to work with you.
You must start doing this every single day because your business is not just a hobby. You're a business and you're wanting to scale to six figures and beyond. You're not going to be able to do that if you're not selling. It's just how it is. Selling doesn't technically mean that you have to hop on Instagram stories every single day and say, “come work with me.” You can sell in so many ways.
If you're in launch mode, for example, you'd definitely get to talk about your story. You definitely get to talk about your program and selling your stories a little bit more, almost every day or pretty close to every day. But you can do it in different ways.
Show behind the scenes of your program. Show the excitement of people signing up for your program. Show the people that are on your wait list, show you going through the applications.
Build relationships every single day. And I don't just mean get new leads every single day. I mean relationships with new clients and old clients. You get to continue to nurture and work and talk and build those relationships with your current audience.
Selling is all about human connection. If we're not connecting, if people don't know and trust you, they're not going to be buying from you. It's very unlikely they get to go through the customer journey and have trust and a bond with you and truly believe that you're the right fit for them as a coach. I want you to go send out five DMs to people who are consistently the first few to watch your Instagram story. Thank them for being part of your community and ask how you can better support them.
This is something that everyone gets to work on. At the end of the day, most of our goals are to impact as many people that we can and in order to do so, we must grow. This could be organically, paid, or both so that you can reach more people.
It doesn't need to be huge, but we do get a focus on it because the things that we focus on are the things that we move the needle forward on. For example, let's say growing your email list is a focus point. Growing an email list is definitely a focus point for some of my clients right now in 2020 and we've added this to their KPI tracking. At a minimum, once per week, my clients that are focused on email growth are looking at their trend, they're looking at their subscribers and they're taking action on a daily basis.
I want you to take at least one of these items, if they're not all already on your list, and do it. If you want to work on adding value every single day, create a list of some things that you can do this week and next week to add value to your audience. If you want to focus on growth in this first quarter of 2020 write down a few things.
Start taking action on them and let me know which of these you're going to add to your daily list. I would love to see them and give you a little bit more guidance. Tag me @theMelissaLin on Instagram stories and let me know which one of these five or all five you are focusing on.
