IN THIS EPISODE:
I have an incredible guest with me named Jessie Lim Liwag, she is a Photographer, Graphic Designer, and Brand Coach she literally does it all. Today we’re going to be dive into everything branding, photography and how to really write content for your instagram posts that stand out so that you can be the incredible coach you are and attract those clients your way.
Jessie started as a pre-med student, following what her parents wanted her to do. But all of her extracurriculars were always something creative, dance, photography, graphic design. But then her Junior year she realized that is not something she could do, so she switched to a film major and got a scholarship to pursue what she really wanted to do. Her scholarship flew her out to New York and it completely inspired her to start her own business. She started dabbling more into photography and by the end of that semester she had over 100 clients for photography. After she graduated she started doing graphic design, hired business coaches, and learned how to make her passions more of a business!
How has branding affected some of your clients businesses?
“It’s helping them in a way where it’s talking to their ideal clients because we talk about why are we making this? Who are we targeting? And how can we make this design more beneficial for them and user friendly because if you are creating this big fitness guide with all these excel sheets and all these numbers and all these links, that will be so confusing for someone who doesn’t know anything about fitness but also wants to learn. Coming from a designer and branding perspective, I need to know how can a client use this product and want to use it again. If you provide something that is black and white and boring, then they’re not even going to want to use them. So. I always work to make sure that the things I’m creating are things that people are going to want to go back and be excited to use and effects them the most.”
Why is branding so important?
“Branding is basically an umbrella term because there is so much that goes towards it, it’s not just about the visuals and the colors but it’s also about the copywriting, the identity of your brand, your signature offer as well as your client experience, that is your whole brand. There is just so much that goes towards creating your brand. Let’s say you are a health coach that focuses on plant based dieting, but there are so many others out their that focus on the same thing, so asking what makes you different from them and attracts them to you as a coach. It’s mostly about you and your personality, the client experience, your messaging or the way that you are connecting with your clients more.
Let's say you client experience is one on one but the way you’re speaking to your clients is not, there shouldn't be that disconnect there because your brand should be consistent and what you’re putting out there should be consistent with what your client is experiencing because they’re coming in and you brand speaks to them and doesn’t give them the best client experience.”
The best time to get started on branding?
“I believe the best time to get started on branding is as soon as possible as long as you have your ideal client in mind. I wouldn’t start branding yourself if you don’t know who you are targeting because if you are trying to target everyone, you are targeting no one. Start with your ideal client and the more you get to do your market research, the more you get to experience with your clients you can start evolving your brand so that its much more stronger as your grow your brand.”
How does someone get started with branding? What are 3 things?
“Your messaging should be the first one. Copywriting and presenting your message because visuals are nice to look at but that’s not necessarily the first thing that you should think about when you’re looking to reach your ideal clients. So messaging should be the first one, the second should be your client experience, you don’t want to mislead people about your messaging or the way you are presenting your signature offer, yourself and presenting yourself as credible on your platforms. You need to make sure that you are consistent on all of these platforms with who you are because if you aren't consistent they will not know who you are and they will stay confused. Then the last should be visuals once you’ve already decided on your messaging.”
Is it too often to rebrand? Is there like a guideline that is too often?
“I don’t think so, I think when you feel that your client base is changing but also with the styles within each year you don’t necessarily need to rebrand, the only time you would need to is if you are changing your company overall or you are resonating with something else that’s much more beneficial to you that also resonates with your clients. We you rebrand it’s more about evolving your business to better fit with your ideal clients.”
Do you have any free online resources that they can use if they can’t invest in branding right now?
You can definitely look up a lot of information online, you can look up how to do a moodboard guide and that’s basically a vision board that you put together that you really like, but also keeping your ideal client in mind and then you send that to a designer you can see alot of elements that pop out and that will be something you can see within everything that you create for your brand. I also recommend. The Copywriter’s Club, it’s a podcast that helps so much with defining and finalizing your message.
Questions on photography:
How do you create a cohesive feed of photos?
“With photography, I would highly recommend a planning app so that you can see your feed before you post it, some of the apps are later, planoly. One of the first things that I like to look at in feeds is the differences in framing because this is a pet peeve of mine because it will seem too boring and dull for me, I like to see dynamics, I like to see that your feed is not just selfies and you have medium, close up, and far away shots and maybe some negative space with some quotes to break up your feed. For instagram, one of the things to do is to pay attention to your background, if your background is really cluttered and you put that into your feed with a bunch of other photos like that, your feed is going to look very messy. So, something to combat that is having a white wall or a blurry background that should separate your grid so that it doesn't look messy. I would also plan your feed to where you don't have two selfies or two close up shots. I would do a close up, medium, and then a far away shot because the moment you start posting the same thing it's just going to look flat and dull. And then use the same filter, I recommend using facetune or lightroom or any other filtering app that works for you, so make sure that you use that filter for harsh light, shadows, and at night. This is because one preset is not going to work for all of those lighting situations so you have to play around with them, so using the same preset will make your feed cohesive so that different photos don't clash with one another.”
Any tips on how to edit batch content photos quickly or even taking a ton of photos at one time?
“The way to maximize your photoshoot is to get as many different angles as possible but also in different outfits, because you’re trying to batch for a long term you just don’t want to use one outfit for the whole photoshoot. Make sure you plan out as many outfits as you can for that, I know that different photographers have different rates for that, but having as many outfits and different locations so that you don't have to be taking photos everyday and then you’ll be set for the next few months. We don't want to be a slave to our content we want to be able to get our message across in the most cohesive way. It should all loom cohesive already. Batching content is supposed to make everything more efficient and easier for you. For photos I would edit them all at once, and in lightroom you can synchronize your edits and apply the same one to all of your photos. For others who don't have lightroom I would say just block out 2 hours and edit your photos on a good editing app to make them all look the same, you should be able to see which ones stand out. For captions- you can write them in Google Docs, read them over and choose the photo that works best for you.”
Any tips on what apps to use on bringing photos, content together?
“I’m a big advocate for Later and it has many features that saves your hashtags, captions, posts, and will post automatically for you and then will also notify you when it’s time to engage!”
Jessie is creating a branding blueprint that will have anything you need for your own brand, your instagram and your launches as well. She really wanted to give people who can't invest in a full branding package so this branding blueprint basically will have different types of presets, a video training on how to use those presets, templates for FB, IG, and for your feed, graphic elements, podcast branding, quotes for your industry!
